Judge orders hearing into destroyed CIA tapes

A federal judge today ordered a hearing on the CIA's destruction of taped interrogations of al-Qaida suspects, against the urging of the Bush administration.

The justice department had asked US district court judge Henry Kennedy not to look into whether the trashed tapes violated his 2005 order to preserve evidence of interrogations, but Kennedy shrugged off the government's request.

The judge ordered justice department lawyers and counsellors representing several inmates at the prison camp in Guantánamo Bay to appear in court Friday morning.
