KFAR CANA, Israel (AFP) - Thousands of Arab Israelis rallied on Friday to commemorate the “Naqba,” Arabic for the catastrophe which they say occurred when the state of Israel was created 60 years ago.
Demonstrators waved green flags as they listened to speeches on the fate of Palestinians expelled from their villages or those who fled their homes when Israel was founded.
The rally was organised by Islamists in Kfar Cana, northern Israel, where pictures from the 1948 war were shown on huge screens.
Israel celebrated its independence on Thursday in accordance with the Hebrew lunar calendar.
About 760,000 Palestinians were expelled or fled their homes when the Jewish state was created.
According to statistics announced on Wednesday, Israel has a total population of 7.28 million people, including 1.5 million Arabs.
They are mostly descended from the 160,000 Palestinians who did not flee after Israel was created in 1948.
