Don’t delay impeachment of Musharraf, lawyers tell govt

ISLAMABAD: The legal fraternity on Saturday called upon the coalition government to avoid any further delay in adopting a constitutional method for the impeachment of President Musharraf in order to save the country from further crises.

They urged the coalition partners not to provide a safe exit to the “unconstitutional president” who had abrogated the Constitution for his personal interests and removed the judges of the superior courts through illegal means and detained them at their official residences for over three months.

Reacting to the president’s talk with senior journalists wherein he said that he could not resign in the current situation and if anyone wanted to impeach him, there was a constitutional procedure available for it, the lawyers urged the coalition government not to lose even a moment and to immediately adopt the constitutional procedure for the impeachment of Musharraf.

“How can a usurper and unconstitutional president who illegally occupied the Army House resign? Such a person needs to be ousted forcibly and should not be provided a safe passage,” said Hamid Khan, senior lawyer of the Supreme Court. He said that the usurper could not be allowed to go easily and one had to adopt strict measures to get rid of him.

“The newly-elected parliament must adopt constitutional measure for the impeachment of President Musharraf or the coalition government would be considered as the weakest if it failed to do so at the earliest,” Hamid Khan added.

He said that a person responsible for taking mala fide actions and unconstitutional measures should be brought to book.
